Salt Therapy — FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Thinking about coming to experience the benefits of salt therapy? Start here.

What is salt therapy? What can I expect?

Salt therapy reproduces the conditions found in natural salt caves around the world. Through a machine called a halogenerator, pharmaceutical-grade salt is finely ground into microscopic particles and dispersed into the room.

You’ll enter the room, feel the crush of salt rocks on your bare feet, and sit in one of six semi-private lounge chairs. As you relax, you will inhale these particles, which open the airways of your lungs and settle onto your skin. Himalayan salt is a natural anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-histamine, so this therapy can help with conditions ranging from asthma and emphysema, to skin disorders such as psoriasis and eczema. It also helps to reduce anxiety, stress and mood disorders.

How long are the sessions?

Each salt therapy session starts on the hour and lasts 45 minutes.

How much does a session cost?

Our salt therapy sessions are $30. If you’re a new customer, your first session is only $20. We also offer monthly memberships for $99, which includes unlimited sessions (limited availability). You can purchase multiple sessions at a discounted rate in our store or on our gift certificates page.

Additionally, we often run a program called Wellness Wednesdays, during which sessions are only $15 (keep an eye on our Instagram, Facebook page and calendar to see when this program is available.)

What should I wear? Is the salt room hot or cold?

As our salt room is slightly on the cool side, we recommend light, comfortable clothing. While it’s not sticky or salty like the beach, there are salt particles flowing through the air during the session, so you may taste salt on your tongue and leave with a thin layer on your skin. It is not harmful in any way. At Salt of the Earth, we provide blankets, neck pillows, and headphones if desired.

What do people do while in the salt room?

The salt room is a quiet, tranquil space of healing, so we encourage everyone to put their phones away, close their eyes, relax and take some time away from the world. However, these are not rules. We only ask that you be considerate of others in the room and talk only when necessary.

Are the chairs in the salt room private?

We have 6 lounge chairs in our salt room, all separated by partitions, so they are semi-private. See our Gallery page for photos.

Are the benefits of salt therapy supported by science?

There is a long history of the benefits of salt therapy, and modern science corroborates more and more of this knowledge each year. Visit our Why Salt? page, or read the ongoing scientific literature here, here, and here.

I have COPD. How will this affect me?

Salt therapy will not harm those with COPD. In fact, we’ve had numerous guests with COPD experience the benefits of salt therapy, including several who have seen improved lung function and have even reduced their need for extra oxygen. Our founder, Wanda, saw a dramatic improvement in the symptoms of her emphysema after beginning salt therapy, which is the reason she opened Salt of the Earth.

That said, please be aware that salt therapy is mucoactive (1), which means it tends to break up the mucus in the lungs. Therefore, those with COPD will likely cough more than usual, and also cough up more than usual.

Will the salt in the air raise my blood pressure?

Salt therapy will not raise your blood pressure. Although you will inhale salt particles, this does not drastically affect the sodium level of the bloodstream. Many of our guests actually experience a drop in blood pressure and feeling of calm upon leaving the salt room.

I have diabetes. How will this affect me?

There are no contraindications for diabetic clients.

Can I still go in the salt room if I have a cold?

As pink Himalayan sea salt is naturally anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial (1), the microclimate in our salt room is as clean as a sterile surgical room in a hospital. Therefore, it is nearly impossible to catch any infection or bacteria during salt therapy. Salt is a natural anti-bacterial and kills nearly every bacteria on contact. That being said, for the consideration of others, we do encourage contagious clients to refrain from coming to the salt room until they are not in the contagious stage.

Do you take walk-ins?

We start our sessions on the hour, so reserving space is important.  Occasionally, we can take a walk in, but that is not always the case. Please call us to reserve a time.

Do you sell salt lamps?

Yes! As you walk into the spa, you’ll see a variety of salt lamps as well as other salt products, such as skin scrubs, bath salts, and night lights. We also partner with local vendors to sell candles, bracelets, and other goodies. You can see our display on our store page. However, as our salt lamps are difficult to ship, we only sell them in-store.

Can I rent the entire salt room for my event?

We love to host events in our salt room! Professional events, book clubs, team building events, bridal and baby showers, or intimate parties. We have 6 lounge chairs (a few additional benches or chairs can be added), a kitchen for small appetizers and glasses for wine or champagne. Pricing depends on length of session requested, and whether or not the event is after hours. Call us for more information.
